Tally-ho Racehorse Retraining & Sport Horse Production

Racehorse Retraining

Our services are dedicated to providing horses transitioning out of racing with the time and professional guidance required to successfully set them up for a new life after racing. Our team have a wealth of experience across a wide variety of equestrian disciplines & young horse production. This allows us to be able to guide them as individuals back into any suitable work of their choosing and match them to the best homes for their new careers.

Naturally our Groundwork methods & system of retraining and production lend themselves to being able to help with other schooling and problem solving such as…

Backing & Starting: Step-by-step groundwork, introduction to tack, long-reining, and initial backing for young horses. Some of the “problem” horses we “restart” appear to of been rushed elsewhere, so we encourage owners to allow us to let the horse dictate the speed. Contact for more info.

Riding away & Early schooling:Establishing early ridden work, walk, trot, canter & building balance and rhythm. Introduction to poles, hacking and life outside of the arena.

General schooling:Introduction to jumping or building confidence to a fence. Helping horses to operate in self-carriage, build strength, collect and use themselves correctly on the flat. XC Schooling and taking horse hunting or competing for owners.

Groundwork Specific “problem” Training

Trailer & Lorry Loading Training:Calm, stress-free methods to get your horse loading confidently.

Mounting Block Training: Teaching patience and stability so your horse stands still while you mount.

Catching & Leading Issues: Remediation for horses that don’t want to be caught or drag you around when being led. Early haltering work.

Desensitisation work: Helping horses to become comfortable with sprays, hose pipes, clippers.

Stable Manners & Aggressive Behaviors:Addressing biting, ear pinning, and aggressive behavior around the stable.

Some cases will require horses to come in for training, others we can come to you.

Watch our work below..

Our approach is built on good consistent groundwork, no drama, simply quiet, clear leadership that a horse can understand. The methods we use are all about timing, feel, and guiding the horse to seek the release rather than into or away from the pressure is a better way to describe our work.

The “problem” horse behaviours we encounter are symptoms of a cause, sometimes they can be pain or impairment related so please don’t be offended if we ask what medical checks have been done up to now.

That being said the majority of the time we are dealing with human-made issues—whether inherited before the horse came to the clients or created by the current handlers daily handling or management without being aware etc..

In these cases if owners are open to refining their own techniques, gaining confidence with some new tools and seeing our groundwork not just as training sessions, but how we should handle horses on the ground moving forward, we would be more than happy to help you and your horse.

What our clients say…

“Spirit has now been out to arena hires and clinics, taken part in hound exercise and fun rides, been hunting and even had a go at team chasing! Oh and loves his hacking!

We still have plenty of goals to work towards, but looking back at how far Spirit has come already is incredibly rewarding. I’m so grateful to Tom at Tally-ho not only for matching me with Spirit, but also for continuing to offer his knowledge and advice throughout our journey. It’s clear that he genuinely cares about his horses and where they end up after racing.”

Thanks so much Tom!
